therapeutic storytelling

narrative therapy skills development workshop

2 x 3hour hour sessions

This six hour workshop  identifies and explicitly teaches the difference between two forms of social stories: LifeSkills and Everyday Stories. You will learn how to create client-centred, easily adaptable and creative stories that gently provide structure, guidance and clarity for people young and old. During this hands-on workshop you will create one of each type of storybook.

LifeSkills Storybooks: Life Skills Storybooks identify a specific task and break it down into a series of predictable, explicit  actions that the client can easily identify and follow. Tasks can be as simple as getting dressed for school, toileting, or social etiquette in a cafe or more complex skills like visiting the doctor. We will work with you as you develop clear sequencing,  I messaging,  and planning, writing and printing skills.

Everyday Storybooks: Everyday Storybooks differ in that they tell the story of an event or activity that the client can identify with. Everyday Storybooks are less rigid, they allow for more creative freedom, can be created with the client and are highly impactful.  These books can be used in conjunction with LifeSkills Storybooks but by their very nature, they are a story rather than explicit instructions.

In this  series of two, 3-hour sessions we will teach you the fundamentals of creating LifeSkills  and Everyday Storybooks as social stories for and with your clients. We will introduce you to a variety of writing and illustration techniques to help you to structure stories that will engage your clients in a meaningful way. Provided with a resource book to guide you through the process,  you will also be offered story structuring techniques, drawing and writing challenges and online support,  This fun, interactive workshop is sure to both appeal and inspire.

Options are available for professional book design and publication but this workshop does not include either of these services.  In keeping with how these books are likely to be used with your clients, you will create books that are easily printed at home or at a commercial outlet.
